Last week, President Obama used the term "Economic Patriotism" to try and shame corporations that were working within the laws of the United States Constitution and merging/moving their companies offshore to avoid US taxes.
Do I like the idea? No
Do I support the idea? Sure.
Here's where we differ. I don't want to try and shame corporations. I don't even want to try and shame the people who support those corporations. But will I economically support them? Nope!
President Theodore Roosevelt said it best--
“Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country.”
"Patriotism means to stand by the country." What a great line. Seriously, a Patriot is somebody who will stand by their country. I consider myself a patriot because I am willing to stand by the United States of America through thick and through thin... and believe me, it's getting pretty thick around here. I will support the companies that choose to support the United States of America. I will support the countries that choose to stay and provide Americans the much needed jobs that we definitely need around here. I will choose! Not because somebody will shame me if I don't. Not because somebody will accuse me of skirting the law if I don't. But because my United States Constitution guarantees me that my government can not and will not take away my ability to choose.
So without shaming (and to keep this post short), I will ask you to support your country economically.
Choose yourself to become an economic patriot.
